Self-filling prophecy

In Leading with Soul, Boulman and Deal (p.88) wrote that if you show people you do not care, they would return the favor.  Show them you care about them, they might surprise you. I find this statement is similar to that of a self-filling prophecy.  I have found that when I expect my staff to fail they normally do and when I encourage them and show them that I care about their efforts and circumstances that they supersede levels previously reached

  1. Hello Future Dr. Smith! I strongly believe there is merit to what you and Bolman and Deal are speaking about. I believe that we, in any facet of our lives, can think and speak things into existence. Thus why we must be careful of what we choose to focus on and give our attention. Just as with this program . . . we all KNOW we will graduate in three years. We have to think and speak it into existence. We have to claim it in the name of Jesus!!! ;-)

  2. It goes back to the trite (but true) saying, "They don't care about what you say until they know you care." A lot to think about and to practice (or, as you expressed it, fulfill).

  3. We all want someone to care. There are so many benefits to all of the technology we have access to now. It makes communicating very easy for us in our leadership roles. I think we need to be mindful not to lose the personal connection with people. There are times when a face to face conversation is more powerful than a reply email.

  4. Exactly! People don't really care how much you know, until they know how much you really care. Let's build those relationships!

  5. Jason, you've got it! Caring starts within ourselves. We must first care about ourselves and then we know the real value of caring about others. I look in the mirror and what I hope to see is a caring person who has worth and purpose. As I go into the world of work, I then look at others and to see the beauty they bring to this world. This has helped me to lead with my soul. I am trying each day to walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
